As per Institute of Sustainable Future (ISF) at the Sydney University of Technology (UTS), energy consumed for water heating is responsible for 1/5th of greenhouse gas emissions by Australian households. Additionally, water heating appliances contribute to 25% of the overall energy consumption in Australian homes.
Considering these numbers, installing a heat pump technology-based water heating system becomes indispensable for Victorian households looking to reduce their electricity bills through energy-efficient heat pump upgrades.
Choosing energy-efficient heat pump water heaters over conventional electric resistance and gas-fired water heaters has the potential to reduce annual water heating bills by 60% to 75%.
The average annual electricity bill for a Victorian household is $1,571. Since water heating is responsible for 25% of total energy use in Australian households, replacing an electric resistance water heater with a heat pump water heater could save over $295 annually.
The anticipated 75% reduction in water heating bills will occur after installing an energy-saving heat pump hot water system. For Victoria state households, another incentive to upgrade is hot water (heat pump) rebates being offered by the Victoria government under the Victoria Energy Upgrades (VEU) program.
Victorian Energy Upgrades Program commenced on 1 January 2009. Since its inception, the program has delivered low-cost, energy-efficient appliances and equipment upgrades to over 2.4 million households and over 170K businesses in Victoria.
The upgrades have helped Victorians save millions of dollars on electricity bills while reducing their carbon footprint by over 80 million tonnes.
Under the program, accredited businesses (such as iPromise Australia) receive carbon credits on every replacement of an inefficient appliance with an energy-efficient one approved under the VEU program.
For example, carbon credits are assigned to us after decommissioning an electric resistance (water heaters having a electric heating element/coil) or gas water heater and installing a heat pump hot water heater at a Victorian home eligible for the upgrade under the VEU program.
We can then sell these carbon credits to an energy retailer. It allows us to carry out the upgrade activity at a discounted price.
The upgrades are conducted under Activity 1D and 3C of VEU program for households and activity 44A, 44B and 44C for commercial hot water upgrades.
